Apple Inc. has laid off 190 employees in its self-driving car unit, Reuters reported Wednesday. Details of the layoffs were part of a filing to California’s Employment Development Department. Last month, CNBC reported that the layoffs were happening at the project, known as Project Titan — apparently the same job cuts that were reported to the state. Most of those laid off were hardware and software engineers. Apple’s self-driving car project has changed focus a number of times in recent years. Earlier this month, California’s Department of Motor Vehicles reported that in 2018, Apple ranked third among the state’s autonomous-car permit holders in miles tested, but ranked last in disengagements, meaning human drivers had to intervene about once every mile.
