Daimler AG is dropping sales of gasoline-powered Smart cars in the U.S. and Canada this year to focus on selling electric Smarts only.

As it goes to an all-electric strategy, Smart USA is dropping the price of its redesigned 2017 Smart Electric Drive coupe by $1,200 when it goes on sale this summer.

The 2017 electric two-seat coupe will start at $24,550, including shipping. That’s a 4.7 percent drop in base price from the outgoing 2016 electric coupe. The redesigned model boasts improved range, more power, a roomier interior and additional standard features.

A convertible version will start at $28,750, including shipping. The Smart Electric Drive cabrio was last available as a 2015 model.

Mercedes-Benz USA, which oversees sales of the Smart microcar here, announced the lower price Monday. It is not specifying what month the redesigned coupe will go on sale. The company continues to sell down the 2016 electric model as well as gasoline-powered models.

Parent company Daimler AG announced in February that it would stop selling gasoline-powered Smart cars in the U.S. and Canada this year to focus on selling electric Smarts only.

As low gasoline prices have increased demand for SUVs and crossovers, Smart’s U.S. sales have fallen steadily since reaching 10,453 vehicles in 2014. The brand sold 6,211 vehicles in the U.S. in 2016, down 17 percent. For the first fourth months of 2017, Smart sales are at 1,426 vehicles, a drop of 19 percent.
