It was a quintessential summer night in San Pedro Thursday, Aug. 29, the eve of the port town’s fourth annual LA Fleet Week.

Sailors in white mingled with local residents in the downtown area festooned with U.S. flags and patriotic bunting on the 1920s-vintage buildings.

The town’s overhead decorative lights cast a warm glow over it all as the sun went down, temperatures staying at about 75 degrees with a cool breeze.

On the outdoor stage, the United States Navy Band Southwest’s 32nd Street Brass Band had the crowd swaying.

And the town’s restaurants and bars were packed.

It was all part of the downtown’s Fleet Week Welcome Party sponsored by the Business Improvement District.

Lt. Commander Jake Maddox of the Carrier Strike Group 1 said he’d never encountered so many friendly people.

“This is the most welcoming place,” he said. An Alaska native, he’d enjoyed some Mexican fare at the Green Onion earlier.

Later that night, a complementary showing of the 1986 classic action flick “Top Gun” with Tom Cruise would be shown at the historic Warner Grand Theatre just up the street.
