Firefighters rescued a person who fell about 40 feet into a shaft Tuesday morning and was trapped for hours in downtown Los Angeles.

Members of the LAFD responded at about 7:30 a.m. to the 200 block of West 9th Street, where a man was trapped in the vertical confined space. The man was alert and communicating with the rescue team, according to firefighters.

The man reported being trapped in the shaft for several hours after a fall.

He was hospitalized in serious condition.
