Education became music time for students in Los Angeles Unified School District grades 6-8 this summer thanks to Fender and Fender Play Foundation.

About 1,000 students participated in an almost six-week summer music enrichment program after receiving musical instruments and Fender Play subscriptions to learn to play acoustic, bass or electric guitar or ukulele.

LAUSD Superintendent Austin Beutner reached out to the company about partnering for a class. Parents learned about the program through Beutner’s weekly school addresses, the district’s summer school offering and from Fender’s website and social media.

Fender shipped the instruments — plus picks, strings, tuner and a gig bag — directly to the students’ homes. Students and teachers used Fender Play, Schoology and Zoom programs for the course.

Students were challenged with at least six parts to the program’s curriculum:

  • Learn to perform one song from blues, Latin, pop or rock categories;
  • Learn 10 important chords and how chord progressions work;
  • Learn the history of several musical genres;
  • Write an essay about one musical genre;
  • Solve math problems that a guitar player might need to solve; and
  • Learn digital recording techniques in order to record music.

The students will be treated to a private event with surprise musical guests on Thursday, July 23 to celebrate the completion of their musical journey. Rapper-singer Bryce Vine is the scheduled guest speaker for the commencement.
