Hot Wheels, maker of the popular die-cast cars, celebrated its 51st birthday Saturday at Mattel headquarters in El Segundo, alongside comedian and high-profile car enthusiast Jay Leno.

The celebration coincided with the Hot Wheels Legends tour, a nationwide search across 18 stops for life-size custom cars worthy of being made into a toy car.

With its inaugural tour last year attracting 3,600 cars and 65,000 fans, the traveling car show returned to the home of the iconic thumb-sized toy vehicle.

The event expanded this year with additional stops to give even more fans a shot at seeing their custom car become an iconic 1:64 die-cast collectible.

Hot Wheels also unveiled its new 2JetZ die-cast car, modeled after the winning vehicle at the inaugural Hot Wheels Legends Tour last year.

Leno served as a judge in selecting a finalist in El Segundo to join Hot Wheels at SEMA Auto Show in Las Vegas, where custom cars will be judged side-by-side with winners from each of the 18 stops.

The panel, along with Leno, was set to include celebrities Adam Carolla and Constance Nunes.
