SAN FRANCISCO — A Friday morning collision between a bus transporting 55 Tesla Motors employees and a Volkswagen Beetle east of San Francisco resulted in the death of an off-duty law enforcement officer.

According to local news reports, the bus driver was blinded by the sun and did not see the Beetle. The crash, which cut off the back end of the Beetle, killed the car’s driver. The bus, carrying Tesla employees to Stockton, Calif., received damage to its front.

Authorities told local news outlets the victim was a law enforcement officer, but would not disclose the agency. A spokesman for Tesla said the bus was “independently-operated,” adding that all employees on the bus have been accounted for.

“We are deeply saddened by reports that there was a fatality as a result of the accident,” the Tesla statement read. “We will lend any support that we can to the authorities who are investigating the incident.”
