Ammunition exploded Friday inside a trailer parked at an Los Angeles County Sheriff’s lot across from the station in Marina del Rey, prompting residents nearby to shelter in place.

“I had just gotten home and saw the fire in the trailer and the ammunition started exploding,” one said. “It was really loud and it echoed.

“It sounded like a shootout. All I could do was duck and take cover.”

It started with a fire around 6 p.m.

It took up to 20 minutes before the Fire Department moved in.

For more than 30 minutes, folks who live at the apartment complex next door were told to stay inside as the ammunition exploded over and over. The trailer is a mobile shooting range for LA Sheriff’s deputies to keep up on their shooting qualifications.

Nobody was inside when the trailer caught fire, but the people who live nearby said they wish they would’ve known it was there.
